Coalitions vs. Free Teams

I know this has been addressed before, for sure, but I still don't really understand the difference between the "Coalitions" option and the "Free Teams" option when setting the map filters for finding and selecting a new map to join.

I want to be able to join or leave or create any coaltion that I want, at any time during a round.

Somebody please explain this to me (again, lol).

Free teams? Isn’t that when you split the countries into different teams, usually for AvA’s? If I remember correctly you basically make teams, and players can pick a team, and then pick their country. It doesn’t change what country you can pick but it doesn’t let you make coalitions because you already start with a team. My bad if this is hard to understand.
