I keep getting told by more experinced players not to make coaltions too early. IS there a reason?

Because you don’t want to paint a target on your back, players will see your coalition and may attack you.
Far more importantly though is to see if the players you ally will actually be helpful and active. You can gauge that in the early game, and once you have enough trust, make the coalition.

I've seen a lot of noobs and really good players make coalitions early in W@W. Why good players join with neighbouring countries and ally is beyond me though. Better it would be to invade the countries between, no?

Say you are Poland and Germany. You copied each others flanks, and still have another direction to go in. It makes things easier. Germany takes our west Europe and Poland the east.

second half of the game reveal everything, who is the strongest, who is the biggest, powerful coalitions emerge and discord team had nowhere to hide, the best player and coalition the game has to offer survive the slaughter and ready for final battle.
now it's the right time to seek allies as you know who is worth to be ally with or enemy to be at war with.
you can't make most crucial decision in an unclear situation.

Actually asked a player that question in a past WaW.

A couple of things. Yes, generally speaking experienced players do wait to form coalitions until later in the game for a variety the of reasons that have been provided. However, I also recommend that you watch out for those that do join or form coalitions early. Some alliances have members join early coalitions with the intent of betraying them, either by backstabbing the coalition of new players themselves or by feeding intelligence to their alliance mates who didn't join the coalition. Also some alliances like to form the coalition early for the added challenge of letting the rest of the world know they are there. Be careful with both for different reasons.
