Only the 10 strongest attack and defense damage values against each armor class are used in combat. The unused damage values determine the loss in efficiency.
So, if you have 10 infantry, 10 medium tanks, and 10 artillery, and get attacked by air, the infantry will defend. If one infantry unit is destroyed, the medium tanks will defend. If the medium tanks are destroyed, the artillery will defend. Also, a nuclear bomb deals damage to ALL units, not only 10 units.

As I understand for units with full HP, it is fairly easy to anticipate :

Damage dealt = (Attack strength of the unit x number of units) x (1-Protection ratio) x (1+/- 20%).

The last element is randomness, and so goes from 0.8 to 1.2

If the receiving unit has different armor class, then you have a factor called damaged distribution. So for heavy armor and light armor unit in the receiving end

Damage dealt = [(Heavy armor Attack strength of the unit x number of units) x [1-Protection] x Randomness x Heavy Armor Damage distribution] + [(Lightarmor Attack strength of the unit x number of units) x [1-Protection] x Randomness x Light Armor Damage distribution]

Where it gets iffy to me is how much damage an unit which is NOT full HP cause. In the help menu, "damage efficiency" is always at 100% for armies 10 units strong or lower, but I really doubt it is the case - must be a display issue.

I bet it is overpopulation

If one infantry unit is destroyed, the next best unit will substitute the one infantry. I think Medium Tanks have better AA damage, so it would be 9 infantry and 1 medium tank vs the air units. Damage is always distributed to every unit in the stack.

Having a bit of a hard time believing Karl asked this question though

Yeah that’s what I meant.

Also yes why is Karl pretending to be a new player

Also, to my understanding, it is neither like Nova nor yahya described when there are more than 10 units. The defensive value of the 10 best units in defense is indeed taken, but I believe the damage is allocated to ALL units.

I didn’t say the damage won’t be distributed

@Nova0213, Chimere interpreted my question correctly, i do know stack efficiency.

I havent noted down how Damage is calculated...

Yes, i never could get the damage efficiency for injured units.

That is correct.

Oh, that would make more sense. I think you mean when there is more than one armor class or the stacks are damaged?

In the above formulae, what is the protection ratio?

The defending damage is applied to the attacking side.

Home defense bonus (15%) or fortification bonus.

@Karl von Krass I found, hidden in the wiki, the decrease of damage due to the attacking unit damage. It is "linear from 20% at 0% health to 100% at 100% health.

So the formula is (for attack on one class of armor) :

Damage dealt = Attack x Number x Health Factor x [1 - Protection value] x Randomness effect

Attack = Attack value of the unit against the target x terrain bonus

Number = Number of units attacking, up to 10

Health factor = [(Health of the attacker/ Maximum health) x 0.8] + 0.2

Protection value = Home bonus defense + fortification bonus

Randomness effect = Random value between 0.8 and 1.2

So the opponent's defense figure has no bearing on the damage they receive, it's purely used to calculate the damage they do when they are defending?

Or to be more precise, there is no defense figure, just two types of attack (ignoring the bunker and home soil multipliers).

Don't forget that if you stack more than 10, the other units after the best 10 in the stack are ALSO taking damage. They are basically just standing there soaking up unneeded damage and cannot really do anything. Thus, stack efficiency is huge when deciding what your strategy will be.

One thing that I noticed is that damage is more spread out in the 1.5 update.
