Damage Mechanics

Hello all!

I have a question regarding how damage is distributed amongst the various units in a stack that doesn’t appear to be answered in the wiki.

I was in a game a few weeks back and I warned a coalition member against having stacks bigger that 10 since only 10 units can attack but ALL take damage. This person responded by saying that larger stacks have the damage distributed more than smaller stacks, such that each unit in a 20 stack (for example) takes less damage from the same enemy stack when compared to a 10 stack being attacked by the same enemy stack. Essentially, you could have 10 really good units in a 30 stack and the other 20 could be cannon fodder so that the 10 good units take less damage than if they were on their own.

Is any of that true?

Granted, if true, such a tactic would be really risky in latter stages of a map when nukes are in play. As Sgt. Horvath said in Saving Private Ryan “I want to see plenty of beach between men. 5 men is a juicy opportunity, one man’s a waste of ammo.”

Thanks in advance!

Yes, that's true

And more than 10 units can attack. The 10 rule is commonly misunderstood, resulting in people thinking they need to keep stack sizes at 10 or less. 10 units contribute to damage potential against each armor type; there are multiple armor types.

Could you explain that a bit more. Are you saying for example if I have an attacking tank that it delivers its damage to enemies unarmored, light AND heavy units

Delmarva pirate-ripping, running and hiding.
Walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction, taking every wrong direction on his lonely way back home.

Maybe an example will help. You have a stack of infantry and anti tanks. An enemy stack approaches that is 50% light armor and 50% heavy armor.

Your stack maximizes damage potential at 10 inf + 10 ATs. A 10/10 stack does more damage than a 5/5 stack, because the units specialize in different armor classes.

Can you have 10 arty and 10 melee units fighting at full efficiency while in one stack?

No. They would have to be separate stacks

Thank you!
