Dis-engaging from battle

Is there any way to retreat/disengage from battle at all? I've often found myself in a spot where I'd prefer to turn and run and live to fight another day when I see the odds are stacked against me. But it seems that you are stuck to stay for a slow (or fast) death no matter what. Especially at sea... what's the point of having fast destroyers, if they can't escape from a battleship? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Setting diplomatic relations does not stop combat either. A potential ally - with RoW - mistakenly wandered near one of my aggressive submarine packs and got lit up. No matter what I did in the unit interface, diplomatic interface, or trying to moving the subs away would stop this. Cease Fire should do exactly that: stop firing!

Cease fire is exactly the same as trade embargo, however trade embargo is what it's called when you are at peace or are allies, and cease fire is what it is called when you are at war. Also this is a thread from 2016 just so you know.

I necro-posted, because this is still an issue. If there is a fresher thread on this topic, I'll post there.

To say that Cease Fire and Trade Embargo are exactly the same thing, is an oversimplification and quite frankly, wrong. They are most definitely not the same thing. Cease Fire is a de-escalation towards (hopefully) peace. Trade Embargo is an escalation towards war.

"Tactical withdrawal" IS a viable military strategy, as is "Breaking Contact". Dunkirk would be a good example of both.

In the game, Ceasefire and Trade Embargo ARE the same things, they may not be the same in real life, but all game mechanics function the same with Ceasefire and Trade Embargo.

Dunkirk was when the German STOPPED their advance and gave the Allies time to withdraw. There was no "battle". Tactical withdrawal in the game is just pulling your units out and hoping your enemies don't catch up.

Yes, this is what I meant.
