Disembarking troops

I just wanted to know if CoW is similar to S1914 in that troops can be absolutely decimated if attacked while disembarking.

Yes. Troops have very low hit points when disembarking/embarking, or at sea.

Free Time looks good on me

But, when moving from sea to land they have ship armor class, so most land units are not very strong (or zero) against a disembarking stack.

I would say it depends a lot on how you attack, because:

Embarking ground units stay ground units until the embarking is complete.

Disembarking units remain sea transport (ship) until complete disembarkation.

That is why it is dangerous to attack sea transports, wich are already disembarking, with ground units in close combat.

It is different, if ground units are already standing on the beach and stranger sea transports wants to disembark there, then the sea transports are the attacker (as ships), and as long as the ground units only defends (don't switch to attack) they are on advantage.

On your question specifically: Disembarking units (which coming out from sea*) are sea transports (Konvoiship with 5 HP) and for thus one must combat them as ship targets.

*If a ground unit is embarking, and returns to land before it's complete, then this "disembarking" unit is still ground unit.

And vice versa. A unit coming from the sea will remain a "ship" until it has fully disembarked, regardless if it changes it's mind and decides to go for another swim.
