Escorting airplanes at sea

Hi guys. Everytime I try to invade an enemy nation oversea I always bring with me a good number of airplanes but I just can't put them in the same convoys with ground troops and submarines & other naval troops so escorting them it's impossible.

My question is: I am doing something wrong or that's just the way things work?

That's just how they work mate you cant escort airplanes on the ocean properly

"Warning may contain a nut"

Two suggestions:

  • Put them on an aircraft carrier and they will move at he speed of everything else in the stack.
  • Since convoys are all supposed to move at the same speed if you have the planes gather with the troops they will all move at convoy speed

Also set your gather dot outside the patrol range.

Other forum participants, including myself, have repeatedly complained of this problem in the past, but resolution of this issue is apparently not a high priority for the software developers. It is not a "bug," but a predictable consequence of existing programming that does not permit aircraft units to combine with ground units or naval units in the same stack. This is the same reason you cannot combine aircraft convoy units -- including both aircraft and rockets -- with ground units on land.

There is, however, an imperfect partial work-around. If you want to provide some measure of naval unit protection to your sea-borne aircraft transports, add any ground unit to your naval unit escort stack -- which forces the naval unit stack to move at convoy speed (27 kmh). Then send your sea-borne aircraft transport and naval unit escort stack to the nearest intersection of sea lanes; from there, you can send the aircraft transport convoy and the naval unit escort convoy on the same course to your intended destination. It does not provide the same level of protection against attacks from submarines, naval gunfire or aircraft, but the software will apportion the damage done by any attack to both the aircraft transport stack and the naval escorts stack, and not solely to the aircraft transport stack. I would also suggest that you send a destroyer or submarine vanguard stack ahead of your high-value aircraft or rocket transport stack, which should flush out any hidden enemy naval units waiting to ambush your aircraft transport convoy.

It seems to me that (many?) months ago there was the possibility of combining airplanes and ground troops in the same naval convoy. Do I remember well? Maybe I'm wrong...

Nope. 18mo of play, haven't ever been able to combine sea based convoys of ground and air forces. As BB said, you have to combine the ground forces with the navy, to slow the navy down to the same speed the water borne aircraft convoys move at.

Are folks overlooking aircraft carriers. They seem to solve this issue.

Not overlooking aircraft carriers at all. But aircraft carriers are usually an expensive luxury in games played on the smaller maps, unless you want to spend some gold to work them into your research cycle.
