Military Espionage is against the army, photography reveals armies, and 1 per every few provinces will do.
Espionage: reveal all armies
So it is common practice to install 4-5 spies in an empty province and select them on militairt espionage, there is a very good chance it will reveal all armies of the targetted country. In the current game I had 3 times 5 spies in empty provinces, but in no case it provided me reveal all armies. It has been changed recently?

I still had good experiences with this very recently; chances seem to be consistent with how they always were. Of course it is possible that you had a fluke case of extremely bad luck?Gen. Smit wrote:

Assume say that 5 spies give you 70% chance, from the binomial distribution there is a 2.7% chance of not getting it. Like flipping an unfair coin 3 times and getting all tails.
The wiki says a single spy has a 50/50 chance of success. It also says additional spies will increase the chance of success, but no exact numbers are given regarding the benefit of each additional spy. I would love to know the actual chances, but from my experience each additional spy probably provides less than 10% extra chance of success. I've put as many of seven in a country and have not gotten the reveal. Four or five is my usual, depending on how badly I need it and my resources.
If 1 spy is really 50% it might be better to put 1 spy in 7 provinces instead of 7 in one province. For arguments sake, say that 7 in one province gives you 90% chance. But if you put 1 spy in 7 provinces, and assuming 50% for each individual spy, the chance of not getting the intel would be 0.78% or 99.2% chance of getting intel.6thDragon wrote:

This is clever. What if you need to invade a specific target, not a random target
I think he means provinces, not countries. Being Americans, 6th and DxC still don't really understand the concept of provi(de)nces. Maybe we should rename them to counties or something?
Ha, fair enough. I do confuse providence and province often enough. Iβm probably better at keeping their, theyβre, and there straight. Sad really.
I do not know the exact statistics, but before it happened to me a few times with 4 spies that I didnt get information, three is even less chance, 5 spies do like 80-90%? sure reveal all army status, sometimes you lose a spy in the proces, even without counterespionage. I cannot do the statistics without good amount of n and not always knowing whether there is a building in there or not. In the late game my core has at least one building in each province (industry or recruitment), but outside of the core I dont build, safe for army units on strategic places.
Il try again another place
Yeah, lol. Sleep deprivation, not Americanism-ism.K.Rokossovski wrote:

Finally a fifth time it worked again, I was feeling very unlucky, topic solved
