Why does expansion give a morale debuff? I think most people wouldn't mind their country taking over half a continent

I think half the continent would be a bit pissed off about being occupied though.
And if you're fighting such a big war I think people at home don't like their extra shifts in the munition plants, or having to drink coffee made from wood shavings, even if they're winning. Not without propaganda anyway.
Adding to the OP a question. When attacking from your homeland do you have to go contiguously ie adjacent provinces. Was told if you didnt it affects morale.
I have never heard about this or observed, from where did you learn about it?BladeFisher wrote:

I believe the reason for this is that morale is partially affected by how many warring countries' provinces are surrounding it, so if for example you move into a RoW city and declare war on its country that city would be completely surrounded by enemies, whereas if you simply crossed over your border into a neighbouring province there and declared war that province would then be connected to your own (former) border, lessening the number of enemy provinces near it. You're going to get a morale penalty anyway, but doing that lessens its severity.BladeFisher wrote:

Thanks for that.
