Hold fire is good when you want to get closer to the enemy, but another player is already attacking them, generally an AI, or if it is someone you don't want to engage atm. Let them fight it out, get closer, then decide what to do.
Fire control aggressive: when would I ever need it?
I love the option to set the fire control, but normal and offensive is all I ever use.
Especially aggressive puzzles me. It means you'll attack any enemy and neutrals. But enemies would already be attacked by offensive, and why would I want to attack neutrals that I don't plan to wage war on anyway?
Can anyone given a useful example of when aggressive would be needed in stead of offensive?
And while we are at it, what about examples for the defensive and hold fire orders. I can't really see them needed.

I use aggressive when I have only coalition members and potential enemies nearby. I use aggressive to blockade my homeland, preventing my enemies from catching me off guard.
That makes sense.DoctorDR1 wrote:

Yes, good point. Aggressive stance might be your night watchman.
lost my HC :C
but set coast defence arty/ fleet and border garrisons on aggro really helps from nasty suprises while one is offline
additionally you can use it to clear the map if you finished everyone, but need points to close it, so you have to farm bots. i usualy just put my arties into stack on aggresive, and let it steamroll everything in its way throught the night, so i get points while i sleepDoctorDR1 wrote:

Hold is great for subs.
Occupy a strategic shipping lane or port, hold your fire, and wait for something juicy to come your way.
This was even better before destroyers could remotely detect subs. Used to be able to ignore passing destroyers and focus on transports, battleships, and the like. Now, a destroyer in every stack neutralizes waiting subs.
