each unit type only affects those of the exact same type
so interceptors with jet fighters dont interfere with each other sbde wise
I'm trying to keep some tac bombers and fighters in stacks of 5 to maximize state-based damage efficiency. They're in two stacks, 5 tac and 5 fighters each. I'll send one out to bomb a position, wait a bit, then send another stack out. Then I go afk. When I come back, they're in one massive group with terrible SBDE. Do I just have to put them at different air bases?

As for your issue of Air Stacks Merging when you're away.. I'm not very experienced but I can't recall that EVER happening to me.
An example. 25 TacBombers (TB) and 25 Interceptors (INT) in one province.
I launch All of them to PATROL a target, then while they are in transit, I "SPLIT" the 25/25 stack and peal way a 20/20 stack and set to Patrol in the exact same spot, then peal away a 15/15 stack... to do the same... and so on...
When I'm done I have 5 x 5/5 stacks patroling the exact same locations and all hitting within a second of each other every 15 minutes.
When you set your units to target... are you sending them to Attack? or to Patrol? Perhaps if you are sending to attack, they are merging after they have returned from their first mission? Then launching as one large stack for their second mission to same location.
