It works as if artillery does if the enemy ship just gets into range then their bombardment starts if you stay out of the enemys range you should be fine use battleships and cruisers to keep the losses down

Title pretty much says it... how exactly do naval battles work? I know that if you have two ships in direct combat , for example a sub and a destroyer, there is a battle timer, just like land units. However when two ships are bombarding each other, they seem to attack randomly at different times. How exactly does this work?

Each attacking force fires once an hour. Each attacking force has its own timer. You can see the attacking force'a timer by hovering the cursor over it.
