How to not attack?

I started a new game a few hours ago and got attacked pretty quickly. We both just have level one units.

I thought being on the defensive would help, as most of the units on both sides are infantry, so when he advanced, I sat one the border in one case, and on my land in another and waited.

Once he reached me, the newspaper reported a perfidious attack, but my units attacked as well as defended. Is there a way to just defend and reap the benefits of units designed to not attack?

Usually, when your troops are attacked, there would only be one attack timer for your enemy. The so-called "defensive" stat is more like a counterattack stat, where, when your enemy attacks with the attack stat, you deal damage to him with your defensive stat. However, if you press attack, your own attack timer will also tick, and there will now be two attack timers hovering above the battle. That's when you see your own troops "attacking" as well. I can't really show an example right now because I have no melee battles/bombardments going on in my games.

TL;DR: You deal defensive damage when you don't do anything and let enemy attack = one attack timer. You deal defensive and offensive damage when you press attack on the enemy = two attack timers.

That wasn't my experience last night. I placed units on the border and in my own land and waited for the oncoming armies and the result in each case was a two-sided attack. I know troops in a province dot defend, but it seems to me meeting "on the road" made my units auto-attack.

Unless its related to us not being at war until the units met?

The only way you're NOT attacking yourself is when you stand completely still BEFORE the actual encounter (which can start when there is still a small distance between both armies, like a few minutes of moving) when either side adjusts their orders). If you're moving as well when the engagement starts, your own timer starts ticking as well.

If this is what you did and you're sure of this, you've found a bug; but it's unlikely since I played this game for a long time and never seen any error in the above mechanism... you're probably overlooking something?

Entirely possible. I'll try some things, see if I can work out what I did.
