India has more influence on Sri Lanka if anything… that’s just China trying to trade with everyone to gain influence.

And no, Sri Lanka isn't just part of India, it's a separate sovereign nation with it's own history and diverse culture. Honestly, countries like Pakistan have more in common with India than Sri Lanka, since Pakistan was artificially created by the British, whilst Sri Lanka was always separate from the Raj.

Economically, no one country has an advantage than others, but each superpower is strong in it's own right; India for its proximity and being the birthplace of Hinduism and Buddhism, whilst being our only neighbour (except the Maldives, but that doesn't really count since everyone forgets they exist). China for its trading power and its willingness to aid Sri Lanka in the String of Pearls scheme (us Sri Lankans know it's not out of goodwill, the nation we distrust the most is China). Japan has a very good relationship with us since many technologies we get from there; interesting history fact, but it was not the Sri Lankan prime minister who advocated against the exclusion of Japan from world affairs after WW2, since he believed everyone deserved a second chance. Japan has always been grateful to Sri Lanka for that. Australia is a huge support since they have the highest aborad-living Sri Lankan population. Middle Eastern countries look at Sri Lanka favorably as well since we acted neutral in the Indo-Pakistani conflicts and since we have a small but noticeable Muslim minority. Western regions like the US and Europe probably know the least about us, but those who do know have aided tremendously (the US and UK aided the government during the civil war with naval training exercises and such)
