Is it normal for a non-coalition member to earn more gold at the end of the game than the members of the winning coalition?

Here are the gold payouts from a game that just finished today:

Me (Nepal), China, Tibet and Germany were all in the winning coalition. However, South Africa (who was not in our coalition) recieved more gold than all of us at the end of the game. South Africa had 690 VP at the end of the game, which is coincidentally the difference between his gold payout and my coalition members' gold payouts.

Yes. 2nd place solo usually gets the same payout as 1st place coalition + their actual VPs.

Odd... I've never really noticed that before.

Then again, I usually don't pay much attention to the gold payouts notifications anyway.

A month or so ago I re-joined a HWW after 22 days offline. I was being attacked by the dominant coalition, but managed to fend them off. They won after about a week, but I got considerably more gold than they did. I thought this was pretty unfair given that AI ran my country for most of the match.

I agree, any winner should always get more than any loser. Then again, this is just about a gold payout which lands in a big chest under lock and key anyway, so not really a big deal.
