Luxembourg and Food - how is this programmed

The game mechanics seem to imply:

  • that food only comes from Food producing provinces
  • countries are self sustaining at start
  • base production decreases to 25% of base when conquered
On the 10 and 22 player maps Luxembourg produces nothing to sell on the market, but is a self sustaining country (I do not currently have any of the other maps to check Luxembourg). This seems to imply that each province/country does indeed produce some level of food production, even though no food province may be shown for that country. Otherwise Luxembourg would rebel against it's gov't on day 1 due to starvation.

My question is: Does the indigenous food production that seems to occur in the above example get accounted for in the programming that calculates food production and consumption by local populations?

If not perhaps each province (that is not a production center for food) should be given a nominal food production value that would be included in the calculations. This might also reduce some of the resource consumption issues noted on the larger maps.

Peter, I do know that AI countries are programmed to buy and sell resources.

ok, I can buy into countries using tax revenue to purchase additional food for their populace. However, I think there is still some food production by the locals to feed themselves. After all chickens and cows would be extinct species otherwise with all the wars that have been waged over time, and back yard gardens would still exist, particularly in provinces where minimal fighting occurred.

In reality, this is absolutely true. In the game, not so much.
