I ran into a guy that spams medium tanks. ONLY MEDIUM TANKS HE USES. And high level too. Doesn't seem like a good strategy, as I can easily take them out with arty and attack bombers. But why would players do this in the first place?

To be honest most people donβt take the time to look through advantages and disadvantages of each unit, especially in terms of resource cost, time taken to produce, and unit speed. People tend to stick with what they know - I imagine this individual looked at the stats and thought βseems good enoughβ and spammed medium tanks.
I used to do the same with light tanks until I realised they had zero protection from arty and aircraft - I now hardly ever use light tanks, and never on their own.
The short answer is inexperience and a lack of willingness to learn about the game!
Edit: Even high level players can be beaten by relatively new players who study the game and have an ounce of strategy and common sense. Another reason to take player records, profiles, ranks, and KDR with a pinch of salt!
Have a blessed day <3

As Sam said, Iβve taken out people as high as level 180 when I was like level 100 myself. Using your brain will always trump βexperience.β Learning how to use different units and manage your resources is even more effective than gold spamming in the long term.

Enter the Finnish strategy
spam AT guns
Throw Molotov cocktails at Soviet tanks
use attack bombers

Technically they did .
Volunteer fighter pilots from the uk, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway and France all formed the finish air force using mostly outdated aircraft to destroy the Soviet biplanes

Those were very small in number and had no effect. Also this is 1940, France has fallen and the UK is busy, so this is kinda debatable

Oops it stretched, not started in 1940. France still existed. Either way Finland only had 114 outdated aircraft (60% were lost in the war) against 3000 soviet planes, some of them being decent. Probably better to spam commandos than planes

Ok, I just introduced 2 of my friends to CoW.
What unit do they immediately start producing?
Tanks.
So I ask "Why do you keep making tanks?"
And they look at me like I just told them I was satan in disguise and say:
"Because they're tanks"
Put simply, even an idiot knows that tanks are good and are stronger than infantry (or assumes so), and therefore they know that whatever happens a tank will be good somehow. The medium tank choice is natural because calling something light assumes it's fast but weak, and calling something heavy implies it's slow but strong - so they go for the medium.
Medium tanks used to be (and still are to a lesser effect) the backbone and main unit in my army, then I got blueprints for a light tank, and as you can imagine, I naturally switched (this was like 2 months ago), there are lots of great units but I know those 2 units always work, and they tend to do most of the job in normal rounds. (I love roleplay and historical games because I can actually afford to spend research time on stuff I want to try, or that I know will be better if I have time to implement - e.g. strategic bombers - those are things I wouldn't bother with in normal rounds.
