There is no reason. Only noobs give attack orders to their close combat units.
Move/attack vs. Attack
I'm having trouble understanding the nuanced difference between a ground unit that moves into contact with an enemy unit and, in doing so, initiate melee combat... versus a ground unit clicks 'Attack' first, and then moves into contact with an enemy unit.
For planes I understand the distinction between patrolling/fighting versus 'attacking' a target and then immediately flying back to base.
But I need help understanding the ground combat situation. Why would someone click 'Attack' then move into melee, rather than simply move, encounter the enemy, and consequently initiate melee?

OK. Thank you.
When using them with a country you are at war with, as long as there are no ranged units in your stack, both buttons will do the same thing.

Not. True.
Attack orders will attack the target no matter who owns it. This starts a war with a neutral country. The only time this is safe is when the target is owned by someone who gave you RoW or Shared Maps. Else you will start a war by accident, and more often than not, you will regret this new war.
Do not use attack orders with close combat units.
OK. Thanks everyone for the info.
Sorry, I should have been more clear with my post. I just fixed it.z00mz00m wrote:
