mysterious province conversion

So, my ally and I were mopping up an inactive player.

The inactive gets eliminated, but many provinces still have low morale.

I place units on production provinces to give them a morale bump.

At day end, two of the provinces convert to ownership of my ally as well as snarfing my garrison units.

I assume this was some type of rebellion, but I got no notifications and did not see anything in the news.

One province was 2 away from the nearest province of my ally and my ally had never been to that province.

So what is the mechanism at work here?

Where in there does it say anything about this?

In fact that articles seems to contradict what happened...

Trust me, if you wait, it will eventually go higher. Don't know if putting units there will work

What? The problem is not the morale level.

It is that there was a transfer of ownership that was not reported.

and that and the units were "captured".

While having units at the province center can suppress a rebellion, this does not improve the morale of the province. If the rebellion is successful the units will be seized or converted during the rebellion and will belong to the new owner.

Rebellions do not generate a notification. There will be an article in the newspaper. Most of the time when people do not see the article they are not looking at the correct day of the newspaper, as the newspaper will open to the last day you looked at even if the day has since changed.
