Nuclear Bomber on Aircraft

This is my first time actually getting to a later stage game with nuclear weapons. So my friend has the nuclear bomber unlocked and I want him to use them to kill a stack of like 50 planes which are punishing my troops. But will the nuclear bomber hit the planes in the air or do we need to time it so the planes are on the ground when they're hit. An addition to this is if the player just flies their planes away will the bomber track the planes like they would normal troops or ignore them.
