The aircraft will patroll until the carrier is out of range, then it will return.

Patrolling from carriers
When a carrier is moving and she has patrol aircraft up I presume the 'move' with the carrier. I notice we still get on occasions aircraft left adrift miles behind when a carrier is under way but these instances tend to be when they are on deck.
