placing artillery behind other units - how far behind?

Hi - I just experienced an annoying outcome whereby I placed a stack of artillery behind a stack of tanks and infantry. I assumed that an incoming tank/infantry stack would have to first engage my tank/infantry stack before it could attack artillery. It seems I assumed wrong. I note that my artillery stack was only a short distance behind the other stack though so I assume there is a zone within which all stacks will be engaged? Or a certain distance is required to keep the artillery out of it?

I know that there is a short range within which armies can attack each other. That may be what is causing your issue. Try positioning your artillery stack a little bit farther back.
