Was your interceptor still counting down to an attack? When you send planes on attack, they attack the position of the target unit at that point in time. If the target moves, they'll move their attack only once reaching the original position.
If your ints were heading out and the ABs were heading in, it's possible that your ints can pass the ABs without attacking. Re-target incoming planes when your planes are close to them to avoid this issue.
