Let me get this straight. when you are under attack, the damage is received by the attacked as well as any other units nearby. So Suppose you are disembarking on enemy land, and you put your cruisers on the same location as the convoy. Now when airplanes attack you they not only attack the convoy but also the cruisers receive damage. This means that cruisers will now also defend against the airplanes
Ofc this works with any naval unit ig

holding at same point together is not a problem try to go south america from africa with plane convoy ship and cruisers

Have at least 1 land unit loaded inot transports. Merge the land unit transport with cruisers. Send both transport stacks (land and air) at the same time. They will travel together, because both are limited to transport speeds.
The cruisers in the land transport stack will defend transports in both stacks from air attack, and all the units will share damage. There shouldn't be much damage, if the cruisers are doing their job.
