Usually they rebel to countries nearby. But there have been some cases of provinces rebelling to countries that are farther away.

Yep. One time the above happened to me as Algeria. I conquered some Spanish and some Moroccan land, some of it rebelled to Sweden. He gave me it back though, he is a very nice guy.
