How do you stop AI or inactive players from randomly declaring war on you?
I've played a few games in which i was doing well and a lot of players were inactive then suddenly like almost all of them declared war on me so i lost. 
The highest record i had was 15 enemies, of which the highest had 256 provinces.

This has to do with your global popularity.
Actions that improve your popularity with elite AI:
- being enemy with their enemies
- being friends (good diplomatic relations) with them and their friends
- trading with them
- getting war declared on you (added Nov 27th 2019)
Actions that decrease your popularity with elite AI:
- having peace or better relations with their enemies
- having bad diplomatic relations or war with them or their friends
- starting new wars without declaring them before (removed Nov 27th 2019)
- when producing troops while already being unpopular
- having troops in their country without right of way
- getting your spies caught by them

You increase your popularity (and country's morality) by not be at war with so many countries, giving ROW to all AI countries early in the game, and buying their products in the market. When going to war- use trade embargo, and 24 hrs later declare war ...
