Respect for History and Modern Realities: A Request to Update Ukraine's Flag in Call of War

As a Call of War player, I greatly appreciate your work and attention to historical details. However, I would like to bring up an issue that concerns the Ukrainian community. On the "World at War" map, Ukraine is depicted under the flag of the USSR, which symbolizes Soviet occupation and an imposed identity.

In the modern context, as Ukraine fights for its independence and freedom, the use of this flag offends many players. It is associated with the aggression the country experienced during the Soviet era and continues to evoke pain, especially given recent events.

Notably, some former Soviet countries on the same map are represented with their national flags, even though these did not correspond to the realities of World War II. Replacing Ukraine’s flag with its blue-and-yellow national flag aligns with your policy of reflecting modern realities.

This change would not only show respect for historical truth but also resonate positively with the international gaming community, which values sensitivity and accuracy in such matters.

"A game that respects the feelings of its players should avoid using symbols that offend."

Without commenting on the situation in Ukraine, Burma/Myanmar, Yemen and a dozen other nations around the world...

This would be the worst possible thing BYTRO could do.

Adding Modern politics to a game based on world events almost 100 years ago...

Which country gets China's Official Flag (and would it be today's or the one before the revolution ending in 1949), or North Korea and the dozens of "countries" which did not exist in 1939?

Which Al-Qaeda or Taliban linked group gets their flags in the Middle East and do those names and flags change if they conquer territory and replace... say Syria or Afghanistan?

CoW is a game based loosely on history, it's a photo of the world at THAT particular time... trying to paint it with today's politics would be adding poison to an already difficult scenario.

I hope BYTRO avoids this mess all together.

Hello!

I agree that modern politics has no place in the game, and it would be a mistake if it were introduced. However, it’s worth noting that the flags and states in the game are not always accurate to the period of World War II.

For example, the flag of Georgia in the game is the 1918 flag, from the period of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, while by 1939, Georgia was already part of the Soviet Union and had a Soviet flag. Turkmenistan uses an ethnic flag that never historically existed.

Regarding Ukraine, the game uses the Soviet flag, which completely ignores the historical context. The blue-and-yellow flag was already used by the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1917–1921 when Ukraine fought for independence. Even after the Bolshevik occupation, large uprisings broke out in Ukraine, especially among peasants protesting Soviet rule. It is also important to mention the UPA's red-and-black flag, which was used during World War II.

The absence of the historical Ukrainian flag greatly diminishes immersion in the game. Given that many other flags are either fictional or historically inaccurate, this situation seems unfair. Using the blue-and-yellow flag would be historically accurate and atmospheric, while also not carrying any political implications.

I want to point out that I didn’t provide enough historical context in this post, which may have made it seem overly political. My goal is not to promote politics, but to add historical accuracy and atmosphere to the game. If you agree with my opinion, I kindly ask you to support this post with a like.

A compromise would surely be if a Bytro country DID NOT have a WWII flag then yes a previous independent flag is appropriate. Otherwise no.

In this case Ukraine did have a SSR flag, so that should be used.

Georgia and Turkmenistan are two USSR republics, and for some reason, they are not shown with their Soviet flags from the World War II era. In general, the "World at War" map features many fictional flags and countries. If not for this, I wouldn't have raised the issue at all.

You also have the ability to use your own flag on countries you play with. So you have that option and so long as you don't violate BYTRO ToS rules... (such as using a Swastika or something Adult oriented) you should be fine.

As for discussions on which maps were used in and before 1939, that's a great discussion but ANY reference to today's politics is in my view, a mistake and should not be considered for a second.

Palestine should be added to the two Antarctic maps (it coexisted with the USSR and East Germany, so adding it would make sense)
