Spontaneous attack

QUESTION: Can my own unit spontaneously attack an enemy unit very close to it (but not in contact)? I had placed a unit close to an enemy unit; I didn't give it orders to attack. After some time (in my case, a few hours), it just decided on its own to attack the enemy unit. It's not artillery, so I am confused by the behavior.

Thank you.

Its 5km btw, not 1

Yes, there's a 5km close combat radius (for reference, this is approximately the size of the arrowhead on move orders if you're fully zoomed in), but if you were already at war with that country then it should have triggered after your unit stopped moving. Assuming combat wasn't triggered when your unit stopped moving, it seems strange that combat could have initiated later, unless the enemy unit moved closer.

Thank you, I appreciated the info.
