My guess is that one does nothing. Itβs probably there because all the fire control setting are there. Subs are different from other naval units in that they donβt bombard. I think the only fire control setting that matters for subs is βaggressiveβ as it will result in an attack on any nation that you donβt have at least ROW with.
Subs "Return Fire"
With high command subs have a "Return Fire" option. I think I used to know how this worked but don't remember. Does this mean that you can put an undetected sub at the same point as an enemy vessel and not trigger a melee battle? If not, what does it do?

Actually, "hold fire" is not there, but "return fire" is.6thDragon wrote:

I think for subs "return fire" is the same as "hold fire" for other units, but I am not sure.
But in my opinion it doesn't make so much sense, same with "hold fire", I don't see a reason to use it, but it's there.
I think the exact same thing goes for Destroyers, but I am not sure right now.

If it means that you can pass by an enemy or allow an enemy to pass by you without starting a fight it is extremely useful.Winterfliege wrote:

It couldn't be the same for Destroyers because the enemy can see the Destroyer and would always attack. Subs are unique in that they are stealth so, in principle, if you don't attack you can be in melee range of an enemy without starting a fight.Winterfliege wrote:

Return fire on subs indeed means that other ships can pass by without being attacked. The sub then will only attack when it was attacked (in case it was spotted).
Including ships that are already enemy? What if the sub is the one "passing by"?freezy wrote:

Yes including enemy ships. This is a pretty old mechanic, was possible years ago already.
About the sub moving itself while on this mode, I am not 100% sure so you better test it yourself. I assume that it can still pass without fight.
Yeah, I keep meaning to test it keep forgetting to check.
