Subs triggering war?

I moved my subs to the dot of a battle group, but it wasn't an attack command. On land I had started marching toward enemy territory and got the "war trigger" warning, but was not yet at war and was still in my provs. I was afk when the sub reached the BB, but it seemed to be what started the war without warning. Subs can normally pass by "at peace" ships. Was it because I was going to the dot? Was it because I had started a march toward neutral territory?

Pretty sure it's 'cause you began marching through neutral territory. Subs can't cause a war unless directly ordered to attack a neutral unit. Hope this helps :)

But that shouldn't initiate a war unless land units come into melee range right? Does the "this may trigger a war" warning when giving a march order into neutral territory change how artillery behave toward neutral units? The only other explanation I can image is that I unintentionally gave an attack order to the subs, but I was very aware that I didn't want to do that and it seems unlikely that I did.

Somebody should really look into this I guess ^^

Maybe you are using the "Aggressive fire" HC option? In that case, subs (or other warships) declare on anyone they meet.

perhaps bystro is testing out the naval blockade "feature" again.

any naval unit that contacts another immediately attacks.

when this "feature" was first implemented (without testing or notification to the users)

virtually every seagoing country found themselves at war.

it was absolutely hilarious, reading all the news reports of IA countries locked in naval battles.

Nope, I extremely rarely use aggressive and most often use offensive. In this case though subs were on fire at will.

I'm playing a private blitzkrieg game and today I saw France and Spain (both AI) start a sea battle. I didn't see how what happened exactly but a Spanish vessel was in melee with a French one. I was also bombarding the French one so not sure if I somehow triggered them to get into war. Or maybe this is a special behavior of a blitzkrieg game? I don't know the rules of it, but I'm Germany and Spain gave me row.

Well, although it seemed like something strange happened, I wasn't actually watching when it occurred so it's possible I missed something. I need to test if getting the "this may trigger a war" warning causes subs and/or artillery to behave differently towards units of that country.

I guess the most likely explanation is that I accidentally dragged my subs instead of clicking move.

I think the "may trigger war" warning is just that, a warning, without any meaning to game mechanics.
