Under what conditions can you see stealth units in battle

According to the description of stealth units it says they are hidden unless fighting or scouted. I melee attacked a city in which I could see an artillery and and infantry and I did suspect there could be stealth units there also. When I attacked I lost much more health than the artillery and infantry could have given so I assumed it must be stealth units. But I could still not see anything but the art and inf. After the art died I could just see the inf. At that point I reset the attack command and the stealth units (at least the ones that were left, a mil and at) showed up. Are not stealth units supposed to show up as soon as they are in melee combat?

Are there any other conditions besides scouting when you can/can't see stealth units. Are the rules the same regardless of who owns the province?

I've noticed this before, including an instance where there were only stealth units so it looked like the attacker was battling ghosts. My theory is that it's a difference between attacking the unit, traveling to/through the province center, and attacking the province center, where the third scenario doesn't trigger an actual melee battle or something.

It might also be an update issue on the client side. For example, when you fly planes over a city, the buildings stay "?" for a long time after the plane view circle is clearly over the city already. Only refreshing the client (reloading the game) forces them to be displayed, otherwise they can remain "?" for up to ten minutes or so.

Strictly by the rules, you should of course see the units when you're fighting them, but as we all know CoW isn't entirely bug-free.

Stealth units indeed remain stealth when only defending. This is a bug and should get fixed in the future.

idk
