Using the market to buy resources

I bought some resources that the game told me I needed to generate more army units, but it didn't appear to have any positive effect on my productivity. Am I doing something wrong?

Buying resources won't improve your hourly productivity.

If you have high command and have items in the build queue the resources you purchase will be immediately used to start those items, and will not be reflected in your inventory.
