Ethiopia has a decent starting position. Germany has a ton of bots around it.
All of the "best countries" depend on how you like to play
In my experience, in the last WW I played, I was Sweden, being the first country I ever played as, I was very familiar to play as. Its surrounded by water and in my experience, 99%-100% of the time, no one attacks you early game so you can build up and defend if needed.
I am curious as to why a lot people have chosen ethiopia. I don't think it's good, You border both north and south Sudan. and plus you could also border tanganyika if they take kenya and. there is the suadi arabia in the red sea so that's 4 country you border .

I actually like a challenge, so i just become any brazil. we get axis so more power, and its got a good position where we can attack 2 countries at once

You have a very good economy. Massawa gives you a steel city which is a huge advantage early on. With Mogadishou you have a second coastal city which gives you domination over the sea early on. You will control the Suez Channel and the Gulf of Aden so the Red sea will be your playground. Saoudi Arabia will provide you a gateway into Asia once you have beaten him. All that you need to do is ally Tanganyika to safeguard your South and then you are free to expand north to beat both North and South Sudan. If you make a deal with Egypt or Algeria, they can attack them in the back.
