when a unit enters an already existing combat, are they an attacker or defender?

So... I'm having this battle in which I had 2 lvl2 light tanks, 2 lvl2 inf in a mountain province that I had recently conquered (morale 47% at start of battle); they were attacked by 5 lvl2 infantry. I had 3 lvl1 arty supporting them. I had 5 other infantry units at high but not perfect morale and one med tank at 80% enter the battle after it had started.

The 5 AI infantry have killed more than half of my units, and there are still 3 of them left. :wallbash I would like to know the exact game mechanic in the situation of reinforcing troops entering a battle. I do not know if my troops are loosing because of a random dmg generator or because they entered the battle late.

Does anyone know if troops reinforcing others in a battle are considered attackers, and the previous attackers are considered defenders against them, or are the reinforcing troops considered additional defenders once they have arrived?

I appreciate any info on this subject.

I am not sure the exact way it works but I have been attacked and I send reinforcements by hitting attack. I dont know for sure but if I were to just move the units to the same area they dont seem to do anything.

I just wonder too how it may work because I just lost an important battle this way. I had the advantage of defense in this battle. Usualy I use the attack button to reinforce the battle but this time the combat was engaged but opponent tried to retreat just before entering close combat and it stayed like this all combat lenght. So I used the march button this time to my army spot.

Normally I think damage are calculate every hour, but my reinforcement seem to took damage just 30 min. after already have taking damage, and Im dont even sure I done damage in exchange but I took a lot.

They seem to take damage before join the combat, maybe, will need more experience to know.

I think that what happened is that your reinforcement stack took damage when it contacted the enemy which begins your reinforcements combat cycle and after 30 min. the enemy stack was at the top of its cycle and so dealt its damage.

Anyway with no combat log it hard to tell what really happens, but Im pretty sure I took damage when my reinforcement merged with the army already engaged only since 30 minutes.
