Why are planes locked to the Airport they take off from?

Isn't it more realistic that planes can land at a different airport if they want, rather than returning to the Airport they took off from? Why can't they land at a different airport after hours of patrolling, an airport a little closer?

Perhaps their ground crew is still located at the old airport. It takes more than just a pilot to keep a plane in the air. If they land at a new airport, what technicians will be there to ensure it is refueled, rearmed, and still otherwise flight-worthy?

To be technical, they have to land at the airport they took off only if they conducted an attack. If you conducted an air patrol and did not attack a unit, they can land at any airport within the red shaded pie sliced shape.
