Will there be a CoW 1.0 event soon?

I know 2.0 is here to stay. Still, I would like to play 1.0 again. Some time ago, the plan was to occasionally offer 1.0 maps on a special event basis. I'm wondering when that's going to happen.

From what i hear of 1.0, i think i would struggle with it

I'm very good at doctrine, troop bonus etc.

Take that away and i am lost

I think however that veterans would like it

Glory to the Union!
Glory to the Red Army!
Glory to the Revolution!
Marshal of the Forum High Command

I would love a 1.0 map

It has been years... I wonder if the code is still functioning.

This was the initial plan but sadly it is pretty hard to pull off due to how much the codebase has changed since then. For example alot of UI stuff has been built on CoW1.5 mechanics, so UI would for sure break with old mechanics. We would need to support 2 versions again to make it work. Because the effort would be big but the benefit rather mediocre (besides some fun for oldschool players) it did not get priority so far. So sadly I doubt that this will be happening.

I still have hope that someday I can complete those nuclear battleship and submarine achievements

I do not imagine the old engine with the new UI, that would be a lot of work.

What I am hoping for is simply a server brought up from an old snapshot of the code base.

It would be old client, old server, old everything.

No need to support the old system in mobile apps, just the basic Web UI.

That should be pretty easy to pull off?

"pretty easy" is always funny with our codebase :D A snapshot like this was not taken. Maybe it could be done by doing lots of reverts in the git history to reach back to a state of 4 years ago. Then that state (if its not broken somehow) has to be loaded to some server that is separate from our current servers, and games of specific scenarios hooked to this server only. I dont think that this is just a small task in any case.

In the wider gaming culture this reminds me of all the requests for a World of Warcraft Classic server, or a League of Legends Classic server. Sometimes Devs were able to pull it off but usually it was much harder than players realize. It's not just simply turning back some clock.

You see, even if its just a medium amount of work, usually there has to be a business case behind justifiying the effort that is put in. Cos this competes with other sorts of work or feature requests, as usual. I am not sure how many players are still playing CoW that prefer CoW1.0, and if this game mode would even monetize as well as CoW2.0. There could even be some worse case scenario where offering this would hurt our metrics. Product people need to weigh all sorts of things which does not make this an easy decision.

TL;DR: I still don't think that this will be happening anytime soon, sadly.

This could be marketable as a "nostalgia" feature.

For a lot of players, it would actually be a new experience.

It might actually create a fair amount of engagement.

Too bad Bytro engineers don't believe in release branches ;)

Oh my god what I would do for this… the sexy non-urban spam days where I could pump out hordes of units… nuclear ships and subs… the Mediterranean map that I never got to play… such good times. Is there anyway to make this more possible? I’d gladly pay gold to play it again, but I don’t know if that’s enough for the effort it may cost.

I wish

I don't think you even played during CoW 1.0

An extra reason to be nostalgic about it!

Ah yes, i love the days where i never existed and played with units that were removed... ah, the good old days..

Well, wouldn't you want to live a day in the Middle Ages? Then quickly jump back to the present and be extra happy about mobile phones and deodorant?

Is 1.0 something like S1914, except the Jesus part. That's what I've heard.

Yes i sure hope i'm put in Rome or in the UK during any part of the Middle Ages, or perhaps China, very peaceful and no bubonic plague, about 1.034% chance of actually living through the day... yes i sure would!

Fun fact: From what I remember, the Islamic Caliphates had the highest life expectancy on Earth during the Middle Ages. Also I’m hoping you meant the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire in medieval times… either way India, China, and the Islamic world where the best places to live during the medieval times, as they where the wealthiest and most developed regions at the time. That being said they were still hit by plague and war, and some sources suggest they may have actually not been to dissimilar. And after the Mongols and Renaissance rolled around, it slowly but surely drifted to Europe over centuries.
