Reenacting WW2 in Call of War?

Note: edits are in italic.

World War Two saw many great battles and fights. Call of War is designed to have a historical start, but let the player decide how they want to go further. I want to do the opposite; instead of sandboxing and having Germany ally with France and UK, why don't we try to reenact WW2, and play it with historical alliances? I've been looking through the forum and there weren't any serious attempts at this. That's why I am going to attempt it myself. What I want to try, is to create a group of at least seven players, organize a game of Historical WW2 (or Blitzkrieg), and reenact WW2 in Call of War

Of course, there needs to be a set of rules. But because I have no experience whatsoever in this, it is impossible to come up with a set of rules that work at this stage. We need to play a couple of test games first. The rules are mostly going to be about specific dates, at which different powers can join the war, trade prohibitions, and possibly the ban of some exploits that could come up. These test games (well, at least the first one) should be very strict at first, following history as closely as possible. This way, we experience how the game flows and can create a rule system that adapts to this. Later, when we have more sophisticated rules and a larger game group, we can add roleplay stuff or alternate history. The possibilities could be endless.

I don't know how much interest is in this, but if there is enough, we could possibly create a discord server, and organize a game every month or so. No Discord is fine though. Forum works as well :)

Rules for the test game

First, we need to set up a couple of test games (1-3, or maybe more), where we (at least in the first one) follow history as closely as possible. We need at least seven players for this:

Edit: because of technical difficulties, we have to play on the Blitzkrieg map first, instead of the Historical WW2 Map. Luckily for us, Gen. Smit (Sweden) is willing to set up a game for us, since he does have a premium account. Thank you for doing this!

Axis:

Germany - VictoryFirst

Italy -

Neutral Axis (for rules, see below)

Spain - Z. Sakki

Sweden - Gen. Smit.

Allies:

United Kingdom - Kaulities

France - Fox-Company

United States - VZ Revan

Soviet Union - General Freiheit (Lone Star General)

Players that have joined test game #2

Claudio NKVP

Cecil Rhodes

Rules for Neutral Axis

May not join the war, except Spain, when certain conditions are met.

May trade resources with the Axis.

Allies may not declare war on them, except on Spain, when it has joined the war.

Spains joins the war if Gibraltar and Suez are Axis-controlled for one full day.

We have enough players! Test game #1 will begin soon. You can always sign up for test game #2 as well.

How should this be interpreted, 'following history as closely as possible?' Well, it means that Major events of WW2, like the German invasion of Poland, France, USSR, and the African campaign, and the Allies landing in France MUST occur, in some way. Not exactly, as this otherwise allows players to await attacks that will certainly happen. The game is not fun if the Allies HAVE to land in Normandy, and the Germans stack preemptively all of their troops there. A bit of uncertainty is needed, i.e. the Allies are not obliged to exactly land at that spot, they can also decide to land in another spot in France, like Bordeaux, Calais, or even in the Netherlands for that matter. As long as they don't do anything weird like declaring war on Spain and landing there. My advice is: play in a sensible and historical way. How this will work in practice, is something we have to discuss.

Why so strict? If we have no well-thought rules yet, an 'alternate history' game could become very messy. If we have history as a guideline, the game will be more streamlined. The test game is used to find out which countries are strong or could become strong, which things work really and which things don't, what dates are good for the US and the USSR to join the war, etc. Once we know what rules to implement, both sides could do whatever they want, as long as their goal is to defeat the opposing faction.

Rules concerning technology and trade are important but are not there yet.

How to join?

If you like to take part in this, respond to this thread, say that you are interested in playing, and possibly state a country that you would like to play as in the test games. Any ideas for rules, gameplay, or whatever are very welcome. If you know some friends who like to play as well, feel free to let them know about this. Advertising is very appreciated.

Conditions:

Please don't sign up if you are a person that often goes AFK, or tries to be funny by attacking your allies. I want serious, involved people that like to take part in this project, and possibly help expand it. Also, if you are a very inexperienced player, it might be better to play some standard games first, before trying to take part in this.

If there is enough involvement, I will create a discord, in which we can communicate more easily. And again, if you have any thoughts or ideas for the rules, improvements, or anything else, feel free to let me know!

when do you want to start it, eventually I could start a private game as I have a premium version. Is it fair to say that there are certain hours that attacking is forbidden, so that we are sleeping in thye night, or people are from around the globe?
That is very good! We don't have to do any exploit stuff now with the alliance. If you can start the private game, that's excellent.

I'm sorry, but Romania has already been taken. Options left are Italy, France, and United States.

Good news! We have enough players (7)! This means we can start the test game soon. But first, a few minor notes:

1. Three players haven't yet specified the country they like to play as. You still have the time to do that. If you still haven't specified which country, in let's say two days, I'll decide randomly.

2. Please note the time zone you are in in the newspaper of our CoW game. On closer inspection, it's better if this is not done in the thread, otherwise, it will get very messy. If there are any major time zone differences, we will adapt to them.

3. The purpose of the test game is to develop a balanced and fun ruleset, for when we play real games. So during (or after, when you want to do an After Action Report), it is the intention that you observe and make comments. Mainly about things like how strong you are at a certain point, some things that you had difficulties with, some things you think were unfair, or some rules for balancing you would like to have included. Also, for the US, it is important for you to think of a day on which you think it's best to join the war. We could also calculate a bit i.e. if Germany attacks Russia on day 7 or something, the US will join on day 9 (22 months in seven days, so one day is three months).

4. It's best if both sides create a coalition: an Axis, and an Allies one. The Soviets are not allowed to join the Allied coalition (mainly because there are only three places available, but also because this simulates that the Soviets and the Allies didn't cooperate fully, they just had the same enemies), but they may share map.

5. If a neutral nation happens to declare war on you, which you are not allowed to attack (i.e. Sweden or Turkey), don't take any land from it. Fight as defensive as possible, unless there is no other option.

6. Note that the French player isn't immediately out of the game if they get defeated. They can always pull their units out of France if it is clear they'll lose, and move them to Africa, to fight on as Free France. We won't play with weird Vichy France stuff.

Let's begin the test game on October 29th. Luckily for us, Gen. Smit is willing to set the game up, since he has a premium account. Thanks!

Again, if you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know. Good luck in advance, and I hope this project turns into something great :)

Hi, thanks for signing up! You are going to be the eighth player. This means we either need to add another country, Spain, or, we need to choose a player who will not play in test game 1, but in test game 2. I think the first is the best option, although in test game 1 the Spain player will not have a lot to do. But waiting for the next game is more boring than playing a country that is neutral in my opinion.

Rules for Spain:

May not join the war, unless certain conditions are met.

May trade resources with the Axis.

Joins the war if Gibraltar and Suez are taken.

Allies may not attack Spain unless Spain has joined the war.

These rules follow the goal of test game 1 (follow history). We could make Spain join the war immediately in test game 2 if it turns out that the Axis have a very hard time winning.

Alright ill do France then.

I'll do spain

Z. Sakki wrote:

If I host the game I have to play, or hosting can be done without choosing a country?

And if I have to choose, I could take spain if Sakki wants to have an active role, I am currently in a try solo clash 22.

Should I host the game and set a peace or start time delay (until all players are in)?

you can have spain

I came up with a new group of nations, called 'Neutral Axis'. They are technically friendly to the Axis but are neutral to the war. These countries might be a bit boring to play as, so I hope you guys are ok with that (I gave Gen. Smit Sweden because I think it's impossible to host a game, but not take part in it).

For the game options, I think it's best to choose these:

Choose country - Free choice

Victory Conditions - 100% (we are going to develop our own Victory Conditions)

Team settings - Coalitions

Anonymous round - No

Number of players - 8

Start game - When full

Peacetime period - 1 day

Peacetime period for NPCs - 0 days

Anti-cheat - Yes

Max. inactivity - 2 days

Minimal rank - >=0

We are going to play with a password. I am not going to put it here, since that means some weird people that don't take part in this could join in as well. I will send it to you all via the Conversations function (to the right of the Notifications).

I assigned Lord Crayfish to Italy since it was the only country left.

I am looking forward to the game guys!

Hi, I couldn't send you a message via Conversations, since you are a recruit. What is your Call of War username, so that I can send you the game name and password?

@Victory first, thx for the parameters, I will thus select Blitzkrieg for the historic accuracy, it seems by default to set lvl5 but in the parameters I can set entry lvl to 0, in any case I think everybody is beyond recruit ;)

Hi Luther Strasburg,

I hope you have noticed that the test game begins on October 29th. Since I am unable to send you the game name and password, I will do it here in the forum.

Game name: WW2 in Call of War

Password: ww2

Dear players, the game is on, the Game ID is #6302008

Hmm, there is 5000 gold needed to join the game. That's odd. I hope that's ok for everyone.

By the way, did you choose 'start when full', or 'now'? If someone doesn't show up, we have to quickly find a replacement.

I don't have that much of gold

It's very strange, since only the Historical ww2 map has a gold feature, while the Blitzkrieg map is supposed to be free. I asked this in the help chat, I hope they can help us.

We might have a slight problem. Apparently, a gold fee is always needed for a custom game, unless private. We either need to play on anyway and find a replacement for everyone who cannot pay the fee, or we need to do the alliance thing again. We will then have to create two temporary alliances and host an AvA match.

What do you guys want?

Gen. Smit, are you able to create only one game per month, or infinite? Someone in the help chat created a Blitzkrieg game as well, to see if gold is needed. His game doesn't need gold, so I think it depends on the settings. His settings that were different from ours were:

Random country selection

Anti-cheat disabled

Start right away.

I think we have to do an AvA game if we want to start our game. I just heard you can only create one game per month, and the guy who helped me is playing as France in the game he created, instead of Yugoslavia or Turkey, so we can't play in his game.

Is everybody OK with leaving their alliance temporarily? And is there anybody who would like to create the Alliance for the Allied faction? I will create one for the Axis faction.
