In the night of 2 August 1990, four regular divisions of the Iraqi army invaded Kuwait. Because of the complete military superiority of the enemy ground units of the armed forces of Kuwait were deter fighting, at the same time stepping into the territory of Saudi Arabia. The main part of the air force of Kuwait managed to relocate to Saudi airfields. By the end of the day Kuwait was under Iraqi control.
The success of the operation for the occupation of Kuwait was predetermined by the significant quantitative and qualitative superiority of the invasion troops over the Kuwaiti national army. However, Iraq suffered a severe setback impacting on the future development of the Kuwaiti crisis: Iraqi forces failed to capture Kuwaiti Emir Jaber III. Attempting a helicopter landing in Kuwait city with the aim of capturing the Emir met with opposition air defense of the country, while special forces suffered heavy losses. The Emir managed to escape to Saudi Arabia, but his brother was killed in the storming of the Palace complex.
Already on 2 August the UN Security Council passed resolution 660, which condemned the invasion and demanded that Iraq immediately withdraw its forces from Kuwait. The Iraqi leadership ignored the resolution. In Kuwait it was established the "provisional government", which appealed to Iraq to include Kuwait in its membership. On 8 August it was announced the de facto annexation of Kuwait. Part of the territory of the country was annexed to the Iraqi province of Basra, and the remaining territory of the proclaimed the 19th province of Iraq. City Kuwait city was renamed Kadhim. In Saudi Arabia began to arrive Kuwaiti refugees.
The UN Security Council continued to return regularly to the Kuwaiti crisis and to adopt resolutions (in total by the end of the year the figure made 12). Iraq was imposed a number of sanctions imposed naval blockade. In response to is in Iraq have detained citizens of those States that participated in the sanctions. These people were actually in the position of hostages and Iraq was used for political manipulation. Only in December issue of foreign citizens in Iraq had been resolved. Meanwhile, the world public became aware of numerous cases of looting by Iraqi soldiers in occupied Kuwait. International human rights organization noted that many Kuwaiti men were tortured and women raped. Saddam Hussein's troops seized a large number of Kuwaiti armored vehicles.
After the occupation of Kuwait, on the Kuwaiti-Saudi border appeared a large group of the armed forces of Iraq. Almost immediately began to occur to border incidents related to the violation of Iraqi units of the international border between the two countries. The intentions of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein remained unclear. But already on 7 August in Saudi Arabia began arriving American troops. Operation to ensure the security of the country was called "Desert Shield".
On 29 November 1990, after the failure of numerous attempts to persuade Iraq to a peaceful settlement of the crisis, the UN security Council passed resolution 678. The resolution provided Iraq a month and a half in order to end the occupation of Kuwait. If this does not happen, the members of the United Nations collaborating with the government of Kuwait, may "use all necessary means to uphold and implement resolution 660 (1990) and all subsequent relevant resolutions and to restore international peace and security in the region".
January 17, 1991 U.S.-led coalition troops began a military operation to liberate Kuwait. The capital of Kuwait was liberated two days; coming from the West, coalition forces came to Basra, encompassing almost retreating from Kuwait, Iraqi forces. February 26 Saddam Hussein's speech on the radio congratulated the Iraqis victory over the coalition forces, but acknowledged that Iraqi forces were forced to leave Kuwait. On the morning of 28 February, he announced the ceasefire and the adoption by Iraq of all UN demands. On 3 March Norman Schwarzkopf and Khalid bin Sultan at a captured Iraqi airbase Safwan signed with representatives of the Iraqi side of the cease-fire.
Over the four days of the ground operation, the coalition troops completely liberated Kuwait and occupied about 15 % of the territory of Iraq.
