We turn now to a review of the events of this war. In 1937, after twenty years of abusive imperialism, the Japanese attacked Peiping during a fabricated incident. The invader was swift to occupy territory and merciless. Throughout 1937 he siezed strategic points along the coast.

Shanghai fell after 3 months of fighting, in which both we and the enemy sustained heavy losses. The National Revolutionary Army was able to slow the onslaught of the Japanese, though with heavy sacrifices. The fall of Nanking, until recently the Chinese capital, was officially announced later that year. Since then we have retreated, with most of the government staff and assets, to Chengtu.

If we are to emerge from this war, it must be as a united nation. Therefore it is necessary until the end of this conflict for the Kuomintang government to retain power. Historically, this has always been our role -- to carry on the National Revolution against foreign invaders and imperialists, and against warlords and usurpers in China herself.

During the overthrow of the Manchu occupiers, it was the Kuomintang that ended their extravagance and mismanagement of our country. After the Warlord Era, it was our party that led the Northern Expedition to conquer the Beiyang Warlords -- in part to unite against the Japanese threat. It was our negotiations that secured the United Front with the communists in 1937. It was, and is, the Kuomintang that led, and leads, the resistance against the Japanese invader.

We remain committed to the legacy of Dr. Sun Yat-sen; to the Three Principles on which the future Chinese society must be built -- Nationalism, Civil Rights, and the People's Livelihood.The Kuomintang party represents the Chinese people and the national revolution.

On a side note, apart from the German one on invading the Netherlands, I notice that almost all of these are defensive and talk about getting invaded, or are like the USA one remarks on other affairs.
