I think it would make it easier to keep track of your different groups of units if you could custom name them. Like, if I had a group of tanks and infantry, instead of just beings "1st Infantry Regiment" or something along those lines, you could give them a custom name like "Delta Team"

We often mention this, and its been been supported for a while- both as a RP feature and for organisation.
However, (though I don't find it offensive, because i can tell the different between real life and game) Bytro can't risk people naming armies "5th SS Panzer-wiking" or something along that lines. Bytro is a German company and German federal law outlaws anything to do with the Nazi era.
I'm not saying everyone will do it, and personally I don't find it offensive and think names like that help enhance the RP side of the game, but people will abuse the feature.
We're lucky to have the naming of ships, but naming units opens up a new can of worms.

They could always add a filter, couldn't they?

They could, but it all depends on how that filter works. If it restricts naming too much, the system will be a waste of time: I believe we should be able to give letters or directions to units- like "East division B" or "H force"

A filter would be necessary, to avoid the non-compliance of the rules.

I really don't see any point in naming groups of units. Don't know about others, but my group are constantly changing, I add or remove units from them, so there would be no reason to name them since I might rearange the unit very soon.
Also, I find it very funny when people say that they can't find their units or have any similar problems. I hear it even from some of my alliance members. How hard it can be to properly manage your units? If someone can't do it, how can he do anything more advanced? People tend to be confused about basic things too often in this game and this is a very simple game.
EDIT: I am sorry I put some negativity in second paragraph, and it was not intended for anyone here, it was just my observation about some things in this game.

It would make larger armies far more easier to control- after a while having 20+ 'Medium tank divisions' gets annoying- simply ability to name them by either letter or a more user friendly numbering would help. Personally, command and control is something I'm extremely good at; but if you'd pass up a chance to simplify a system further, you're an idiot.

That wouldn't really simplify the system. Keyboard commands, unit panels, quicker selection, scalable and resizable game interface, those are some thing that would simplify the system.
I remember few years ago, when I played Europa Universalis 3, game similar in concept to this, there was unit selection. I though it was cool, I had three armies and I named them all somehow. Next thing, during war, I had to do some splitting and merging. it turned everything into a chaos. Feature is cool, I don't think it would be bad idea to have it, maybe even implementing wouldn't be too hard, but I don't think it would bring too much benefit and surely there are more important things that could be added.
Anyway, general term "simplifying a system" usually comes with a cost, so you should think more about it. And about that "idiot" thing, you should probably learn to mind your manners when communicating with people.

I would definitely like to see the ability to name stacks. It would add historical flair as well as make it easier to keep things organized.

I am all for this idea! That way I can name a army that has only Tanks, Motorized Infantry, and Self-Propelled AA Guns the "4th Armored Corp" or something
