The ocean convoys for land units are DREADFULLY slow. A research option to increase their speed, defensive capabilities, etc. should be added!

Yes, it is. But dramatically increasing the speed of ocean-going convoys of ground and aircraft would introduce a new element of unrealism to the game. Real cargo ships of this era were slow: brand-new Liberty ships steamed at 11 knots (~20 kmh), brand-new Victory ships at 15-17 knots (~28-31 kmh), depending on load and condition. Moreover, many older merchant ships were slower. I would say the present 27 kmh convoy speed represents a pretty good approximation of reality.
I might also add that increasing the speed of convoys would require speed changes to all naval units, including submarines and potential surface raiders, to maintain balance.

I suppose that makes sense. I didn't know the realism went so far as to approximate actual land speeds. I just thought it would be helpful, especially on larger maps, to make it easier to mount overseas invasions.

My assessment of the game's "realism" is that a serious effort has been made to approximate the relative speeds (and other relative capabilities) of different real world unit types. Obviously, when all of the player countries have access to the exact same technology, and many in-game units represent an amalgamation of related, but different real world sub-types, "realism" only goes so far. Nevertheless, the current game does a respectable job of keeping it in the neighborhood of WW2 reality more often than not.
That said, a great deal has been simplified in order to give all players an equivalent shot at winning, to make all in-game countries competitive, and to make the game more playable. There's more than enough detail, however, to give the game the look and feel of World War II, including tactics based on unit types that were typical of that time.
