Air Combat Notes (refueling)

I have noticed a peculiar thing associated with air combat that I want to bring up here as it is not a bug but a weird interaction that in my opinion needs changing.

Here is the scenario: Enemy Fighters are patrolling an area, I sent my fighters to attack it. The attack is successful and the enemy fighters take damage. This works great. Now here is my issue. Once the attack is complete my planes must fly back to base and refuel and then come back to attack again, while the patrolling planes keep patrolling and don't have to fly back to base. How is it my fighters are out of fuel but the defending fighters are not. If mine are out of fuel then so should the enemy fighters have to go back to base to refuel. (This assumes short travel distances)

Suggested Remedies for this are listed below, either one will work.

1. Once battle is over and there are survivors they both go back to base to refuel.

2. Fighters keep fighting until one is destroyed. (Like ground combat)

  • This could take into account fuel and have either one of them disengage if fuel becomes to low.

Yours need to reload. I am not trying to be smart but it is pretty hard to reload 3 guns per wing which require tools to reload while still flying the plane.

That is a good point and i thought of that, but I would think the enemy would be out of ammo too. And if they stay flying when we return it should be a turkey shoot. :)

Well, if your planes go to shoot them down, the enemy is going to be behind them so they can't shoot at them, can they?

I believe patrolling aircraft do not fight at full strength (representing the fact that only part of the squadron is present & they are continually altering which elements of said squadron are on patrol).

Makes sense. During the battle of France, Brit and French fighter patrols would consist of three aircraft while a bomber patrol would just be one bomber. I believe it was the same for the Germans.
