Air planes landing after the attack

Hey,

so i've noticed that for example if you attack a units with your airforce, it is forced to return to the original field, but it would make a hell of a lot more sense if you had the chance to return to a closer airfield no? Like if there is an airfield in the red part, but its closer than the original airfield the planes took off from, why cant it refuel at that closer airfield, this seems like a more realistic mechanic to me idk.
