We've talked about sounds and we liked the "sound" of 'em.
Mess with the Bill, you get the scorn!
I'm not sure what other people think about this, but some simplified sound effects would be nice as an option (small download sizes of course). Perhaps some basic background music also (again, smaller files only, perhaps even old .midi files from the public domain (many non-public domain .midi files are available for super cheap also (i.e. old sound tracks from Nintendo's original NES platform) but as with anything, the sources would need to be located, and this forum would be and excellent source for information leading to them) ).
As a programmer, I know that bringing in music and effects can be somewhat tedious (depending on the platform) but it can make a mundane battle take on some flair.
Also, an alert sound (or small variety) could make you aware when something is amiss and you've been ignoring it because the event is occurring far afield from where your focus is (i.e., a lone scout that's being bombed by a long-range tactical bomber).
Sounds and/or music would need to be optionally disabled but I feel that they would be utilized much more than not.
On another note [pun intended ;-]
I would like to see the diplomatic trade option to sell provinces auto-sort the province list alphabetically. This one small change can make a world of difference when you have to hunt through page after page of province names to find some obscure province like 'Izmir' or 'Kosice'.
Also, when offering a military unit in trade, many of your own units aren't shown at all and only occasionally are the ones that are numbered in order (this last part of the problem (the numerical order confusion) seems to occur on a hit and miss basis and might be a browser issue bug to be reported elsewhere).
The unit listing visibility issue also affects the list for requested units as ones which are clearly visible (either by treaty OR by local sightings) are still not listed either. I don't know if this is a bug or a 'feature' (I won't comment on that) but if it is a bug, then it should be reported to the appropriate area.
It seemed like such a waste to destroy an entire battle station just to eliminate one man. But Charlie knew that it was the only way to ensure the absolute and total destruction of Quasi-duck, once and for all. Please log in to post a reply.

I would never use sound if it is added, and for the alerts I don't see why it's not possible to just have a little "bubble" pop up in the corner.
I just don't see why you can't listen to something like this while playing if you want sound.
Thanks Hippo!
Cool arty Hippo.
I agree. For starters, I would like to see some music (and maybe even cutscenes) that would play after an army destroys or is destroyed by another army.Diabolical wrote:

You couldn't resist making sure we all got it, could you.
Well, I couldn't resist being the one to call you out on it

;-P

We do???Sir McSquiggles wrote:

the idea of sound effects would need to be optional because some of us like to listen to old scratchy tracks of classical music while pretending we are quietly contemplating disembowling you like Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. BUT, just in case one might actually want sound effects, having artillery sounds, divebomber sounds, mortars, machine gunfire, tanks tracks and explosions, etc. would need to each have separate tracks that are triggered only when an army containing at least one unit of the correct type is active. Then the cacophony of war noises becomes realistic.
War is loud, and the louder it is, the closer you are to real danger. So sound effects operating as I've said might make the realism of this game grow a bunch.
At the least, having in-game triggers to open links to page-less websites downloading the sounds and/or event-driven music wouldn't take too much code, I think. And my original idea of .midi files would be ridiculously easy. So easy, in fact, that they could even include options of sound effects settings like "Distant Wars", "Harrowing Fire", "D-Day Shore Bombardment", "D-Day Beach Assault", "Battle of the Bulge".
Perhaps also throw in some funny choices like "Halloween Screams", "Polka Music Missiles", and "Looney Tunes Acme Bombs" with Wiley Coyote groaning and Daffy Duck's and Bugs Bunny's infamous "Duck Season, Wabbit Season" argument with Daffy's face getting blown off by Elmer Fudd whenever a nuke goes off and followed up with Daffy Duck's "You're Despicable!", or maybe just have a stand-up comedian give you an audience-write-off-style insult whenever you lose a major battle.
Mocking sounds from Seinfeld would really go well in a pitched battle...don't you think?
cut scenes would be nice but extremely annoying after a while. But using old WWII footage whenever a MAJOR battle starts (i.e., at least 8 units on each side) and different cut scenes depending on the size of the force and how it turned out with a "Cut Scene Intensity" slider to gauge how often and how long cut scenes occur with the lowest setting being only for the big battles and daily reports and one when you win or lose the game. The highest setting would be for folks who can't get enough cut scenes. That would have cut scene every time a province is captured with no defenses, and every time a building is constructed or an infantry is trained.James Hylton wrote:

A moderate level of cut scenes might have one for whenever a battleship or nuke is constructed and for every major battle and for when a capital is taken by you (or by others) or when you lose your capital as well as lose the game.
I think the Slider idea would be simple enough to implement, but determining what constitutes a triggered event by scale would require a nice survey of the people who actually play this game. And I would volunteer to take part in formulating such a survey as well as getting in on the development of the code to make this game have triggered effects.
Note that I didn't offer to help with the scenes or with sound effects as I'm a systems programmer, not a graphic artist or multimedia technician. But I still would like to get a job as a programmer for the crew. I still need to check in on that but this typing at this point is more for my own benefit than for anyone who actually reads it. I should probably stop typing this right now. No really, I need to stop. So why don't I just stop typing, I know, I'll just do t

who would, except a very few, and the code to do it for some battles would have absolutely no difficulty to extend it to all battles as an optional intensity slider.
