Changing names and flags: the thread to end all threads

Hello, now I'd like to address something I've addressed before, and finally clear something up. Obviously, this isn't the Bytro stand point and thus just my opinion, but I'm using some facts here.

Every month we get the same question about changing the flags or names in our games, and we always get the same answer which normally runs on a simple "No." and followed by "But why?"

So I'd like to clear up why we can't have the name change system like S1914 has it, but maybe offer a solution; and hopes that a Dev will answer me.

Why we can't have the s1914 system:

S1914 is a very old game, and it was made in a point of time where Hitler and the Nazi party had a very small following on line, and it wasn't a meme. However, in recent years right wing nationalism has risen due to global factors, and S1914 mods spend most of their dealing with swastikas and Hitler pictures. As CoW is a WW2 game, Hitler features as the AI leader of Germany, but they use the Weimar Republic flag, or the Iron cross version of the War Flag. While i'm sure 90% of us are adult enough to know that using Nationalistic symbols violates the Terms of Use, some people don't. They are idiots. And, in more legal terms, Bytro are a German company and using the Swastika will violate Federal Law.

The Solution:

The use of flag changes and name changes happens mostly in private matches or RP matches, and thus Bytro could heavily appeal to this growing fan base (I even hear calls for RP Mods), so here is the solution: Nations have a list of other flags, be it their armies flags, or even the Royal standard or Presidential standard of their country. While this would bring issues on the 100 player map as some countries don't really exist, it would help RP matches who usually pick certain nations anyway.

An example of this of would be Germany: Instead of the Weimar flag, you could have the Prussian eagle from WW1, the Kingdom of Saxony flag- hell, even the old WW1 imperial flag!

Name changes should return, but as with flags, you should have a choice of statesmen or generals. CoW spans into the Cold War, so we could offer a throw back to statesmen of old when it comes to name changes- you could be 'Emperor Gustav Stresemann"

This solution allows Bytro give players what they want, but at the same time offer a degree of control over it.

This seems to be a good solution, we could see Mod's add custom flags for certain RP's

Nah. All features should be open for all CoW players, not just "custom ones for certain RPs".

Good idea, sadly yeah having our own choice of flags etc would lead to a looooot more work for moderators. Rather than having certain ones for certain countries, why not have just one massive list (like 300+ flags) of flags that we can all choose from. So yeah, Germany could have the British flag and vice versa. Every world flag would be available to be chosen for any country, a good feature for RPs but also good for normal players.

I agree, i was just saying for when they don't have the flag they need a mod could add it in

Yeah all good, however we're always left in the dark when it comes to new features so..

I agree, the dev's has always been abit bad at giving what the community wants.

My old man deployed to Ireland during the Troubles, was there in the late 80s. Hated every second of it, said he didn't deploy to a different nation to get the same weather he had back home.

Very brave, certainly wouldn't want to be around Ireland during that time period. Yeah that would suck haha, if I'm getting deployed it better be somewhere sunny.

Scary. Glad I didn't have to live through that time. Although we have our own threats these days which are just as bad if not worse.

Sinn Féin are not a racist and they are not an illegal group/terrorist group. They are a legitmate politcal party both acorss and the North and South of the island of Ireland (Although I dont support them I respect their stance on some issues) (from tone of conv I assume thats the image not the fellow in a bath)

I like this idea of choosing your own flag. Of course, there would be different choices, not uploading an image.

I like the idea too it is in another Bytro game but has often been abused and that would be the main concern if it was allowed. Look at coaltions players abuse them by putting in clear ToS breaks. But we have a great community that often report those troublesome players.

Which is why we should have preset flags, ones that people cant abuse. That way, we all win and mods don't have another head ache
