Defense damage in naval war

as I was playing call of war I realised when I attacked an infantry from Artillery infantry gets damaged and Artillery gets nothing which makes sense. but when we go to battleships in the sea. if I attack a battleship stack that is attacking someone else, my ships also get damaged. let me know if my observation was right or not.

also what is the significance of defence damage by a battleship? is that only for hand to hand fight?

Almost all units have defensive damage in melee. If you attack a battleship from range while it's shooting at other target it should not damage you back, however if you are in close combat, it will deal defensive damage anyway, same applying to aerial attacks. My explanation is that while the main long range cannons are busy reloading, while in melee or aerial attack the lower range defensive guns on the ship are manned, and used to defend.
