Defensive scorched earth tactics

Would anyone else be at all likely to use a function where you can destroy your own buildings?

I'm currently executing a cowardly flight strategic withdrawal from my core provinces which are being invaded on all fronts and moving to an overseas colony, to prepare for a recapture mission later in the game (except realistically I expect someone else will finish me off before I get a chance to do that), and in doing that I've been cancelling a lot of projects I don't want captured, but I also have a number of finished facilities I don't want falling into enemy hands. Being able to destroy them (without using friendly fire weapons, none of which I have or can produce at short notice) would come in useful.

Its not really a bad idea, has a historical basis. If it was to be implemented (not gonna happen) I wouldn't make it instantaneous[/i] but have a count down associated with it that stops if captured.
As other people have pointed out, it does seem a bit like petty behaviour towards other, conquering players, which is something I hadn't considered when I made the suggestion.

Some kind of countdown could improve it, yes; perhaps it could lose hitpoints at the same rate as a city under fire (and increase speed if the enemy starts attacking it as well).

Other ways this idea could be improved to stop people from mindlessly destroying everything as a default reaction the minute things start looking bad: 1) having to sink resources into destroying buildings - obviously you'd already lose whatever you paid to build the thing in the first place, but also having to pay to get rid of it could make people think twice before doing it; 2) having a limit to how many buildings you're allowed to destroy in one day, so people have to think harder about which ones they're going to remove.

All in all, though, I've pretty much reversed my original opinion on this idea. Although if other people can turn it into something workable, that's great.

I'm all for this. If there's one thing you should be petty about, it's war.

In a game, where the object is to have fun above all else, that's debatable.

Personally I would find this sort of function more fun, albeit enraging when used against me (the two are not mutually exclusive - I'm currently having the time of my life being flattened in a WaW), but the majority of people responding to this thread would seem to disagree.

Your also all for getting rid of the playerbase! This legit gets rid of the reason to capture cities besides the VP.

This feature would make 'being active' more attractive, also in case you are losing! Time for revenge and pressing the demolish-Button.

There could be different types of it too:

demolition: more oil/goods usage but quicker; chance that structure is still available with hitpoints left

dismantling: get back more ressources but takes a long time, especially bunkers and really massive structures

Using what other people said to tweak the idea:

You could make it so it takes time (albeit less than building) Or preferably implement Hurabala’s idea which I actually really like

Make it cost resources to destroy (I mean it takes resources to get bombs for example to blow a building up)

Another idea that this gave me is land mines, which damage units if they take the province center, and/or structures that work the opposite of infrastructure, slowing enemy units movement in your land. This allows you to slow down units and fight enemy better. There would probably need to be some counter to this so attacking does not become too much harder though.
