Destroyers finding and damaging subs

We all know the limitations on finding subs so I'll skip to the point.

I would like to purpose having the circle around a destroyer turn red (it is white now) when a sub you are at war with is within that circle. Second part I would like to see the destroyer cause damage much the same way a plane causes damage every 15 min while circling. Instead of circling the destroyer sits on top of the water and does not move for 15 min and this would give the destroyer a depth charge attack. If the destroyer moves, the time starts over when it stops. The destroyer can't see the sub except his circle turns red...when it goes white either the sub has moved or was sunk. (Go to the paper to find out). Stacking destroyers give you more depth charge hits per 15 min.

The strategies are endless. Gamers who are on can move their subs or just keep them moving and would probably result in no damage. Letting your subs sit can get them killed.

I like it to, pays homage to the limited way in which destroyers were able to find subs in WWII. Right now destroyers are useless in finding subs unless you decide to set them on a course where they could run into them (litterally). Kind of defeats the purpose of destroyers being able to do ranged damage to subs if you ask me.

As old as CoW itself, but still a good idea.

However, in return, the submarines must become ranged fighters as well or they should not be fixed in close combat. Otherwise Bytro could convert the CoW-subs completely into bare patrol boats just as well.

I would debate this. Subs have extraordinary power due to their ability to stay hidden, stack up and surprise the enemy. They provide an unchecked early warning system on invasions.

Having the ability to spot the general area of subs and possibly create damage creates a much more balanced approach to the game. If the sub wants to attack, so be it they know how. If the sub wants to run and fight another day they have that option.

What was the German casualty rate among subs 85%? In the COW game, unless your an idiot, it is around 30%. Who wouldn't want to go hunting for subs off their own coast this way? Or hunt and try to get a few licks on them while they are down there.

This is one of the better suggestions I have seen of late, but does sound difficult to implement. I would certainly be interested in at least testing something like this!

Yes and no. (I am an old programmer from the 80's). Break it down into parts.

1) The circle has to change color when passing by an enemy sub. (Must be at war, must be in circle range) That is only one more calc as the ships move.

2) The Destroyer has to have a clock when it is stationary AND the color has changed or its sits there and the circle is white. The code for planes circling would be where to start and when a target moves out of range the clock stops and color goes to white.

3) If you have stacked units (either subs or destroyers) you have to use the algorithms in place for multiple units.

That's about it.

I know I simplified it, but much of what we would need is already implemented for planes patrolling.

An expanded outlook would be to give other surface ships a change to drop a depth charge or two as well (they would do a whole lot less damage than destroyers) and force the subs to move or commit.

Here's a poll to give a better understanding of how people feel about it.
