I'd agree with you... unfortunately, with our current player base, this seems like a recipe for huge amounts of drop-outs.
Economic/Foreign relations focused event/scenario
I think that a Game mode where you have to focus on a strong economy before anything else would be cool. In this game mode countries in places with more oil would be able to trade their oil for something they cannot get. Also, people would have to build their economy before attacking because their production of food and steel or rare etc. Would stop being produced or be produced less because of the fact that the country is at war the morale in that country gets lower. In short, i believe a gamemode that penalizes players who donβt form a strong enough economy would be a lot of fun.

I'd agree with you both. Great outside the box thinking and providing more for a wider variety of players is a great way to expand the player base. Instead, we are in a self fulfilling prophecy of ghost joins and drop outs becasue the devs have taken their player base and focused it by limiting the map and standardizing the gameplay. More options for creating games is needed and sky is the limit. Putting everyone in the playpen regardless of experience or desires is no way to create a love for life long learning, just as it is not a way to create a game for a wide and growing player base.
I totally agree that there should be more outside the box thinking. There has been no real changes regarding strategies, new game modes, or new maps recently.
What if there we a restriction and only players level 50 and above could play it. The level would also be high because getting a well enough understanding of the military aspect of this game is pretty hard but a game where economical power is the main focus would be very challenging. Higher level players arenβt as likely to drop out of the game. And they could institute a drop out system where if you are not under attack by another nation and you drop out and the game is over you get striked. Three of those and you get a temp ban. Or something among those lines.
