Entrenchment may not be the right word as I say entrenchment, but I want it to include sandbagging, putting up barb wire, putting up camo nets and laying mines.
This would be a temporary defence bonus for land units that builds up from 2 to 5 days stationary, hence would not apply to units that have just stopped.
There would not be any cost to the player but time, and only starts on commencement of the 2nd day stationary and builds up to max defence benefit on the 5th day stationary.
I know there has been some words on this in the past in this forum before it got lost.
I was in a regiment, and all elements of the regiment when deployed to the field would be involved in some form of defensive activity be it digging shelters or fighting pits, sandbagging, putting in machine gun posts, putting up barb wire, putting up camouflage netting and putting in mine fields. This all took time, but did make a big difference to the degree of protection rendered if attacked, and would be a benefit here and add that extra degree of realism to an already great game.

The unit statistics already favor the defender in most cases, Which assumes that they have spent a little time "digging in"
To summarize: A moving unit "attacks" and a stationary unit "defends" at that combat cycle.
As you can see in these stats:
The values are 50% higher for defenders compared to attackers.
Now if you really want to "dig in" you can build a fort and have 23% fortification bonus in 12 hours, which means the fort absorbs 23% of the damage that would be inflicted on the occupants.
You can increase the level of fortifications up to level 5. Fortifications over level 3.5 will conceal their contents from the ground, even ground units in direct combat.

Thank you for your reply above.
These defending values you are quoting are the same whether you have just stopped or have been stationary for a week.
Where you are defending may not be a town/city and hence you want be able to put a fort there.
In Military school it was always recommended if possible to attack the enemy whilst they where on the move. There was the surprise element, but the big plus was you didn't have to overcome any enemy entrenchment, barb wire, sandbags etc. because they didnt obviously have time to put it in place, because you have only just stopped them moving.
Most armies are trained to immediately on stopping for an extended break to start putting in defensive protection for the obvious immediate advantages gained. After three days being stationary you can have put in some pretty good defences, but in this game to then be attacked by someone that has just moved in, to have the same defensive points as you, when they dont have any entrenching, barb wire, mines etc is not a true representation of battle between a 3 day stationary infantry unit and one that has just moved there, now or in WW2.
I would not imagine it would be too hard to make a small adjustment to infantry units defence values if they have been stationary for 1,2 or 3 days.
CoW is a good game. Some minor adjustments or tweats could make it even better.
